Healthy Kids Survey
Background:
The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is the largest statewide survey of resiliency, protective factors, and risk behaviors in the nation. Across California, the CHKS has led to a better understanding of the relationship between ¶¶ÒôÒõapp' health behaviors and academic performance, and is frequently cited by state policymakers and the media as a critical component of school improvement efforts to help guide the development of more effective health, prevention, and youth development programs. It provides a means to confidentially obtain data on student knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions about the topics it covers.
CalSCHLS in SRVUSD
¶¶ÒôÒõapp Unified School District will administer all three surveys. The district's administration window is February. Each school will schedule their own administration dates and times for their surveys. All surveys are anonymous and are for the use of the district and school. Participation is voluntary, but encouraged as the information provided will help guide district and school efforts to promote safety, enhance learning supports, improve ¶¶ÒôÒõapp achievement and reduce health risks that stand as barriers to learning.
The CalSCHLS system includes:
- the (CHKS);
- the (CSSS); and
- the (CSPS)
All three surveys were developed by WestEd with the help of Duerr Evaluation Resources and expert advisory committees of educators, researchers, and practitioners. The staff and parent surveys were added to CHKS to address the needs of districts for data on school working conditions, parent involvement, and enable comparison of staff and parent perspectives to student self-reports.Designed as a flexible data system that meets multiple needs, all three surveys can be customized by combining different modules and adding questions. It is an ideal tool for collecting data on local priorities as part of a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).
